Even before I had specific ideas, I knew for sure that just as Barbi and I needed God’s help to fight this fight, we needed His help in determining how best to tell our boys. So Barbi and I prayed a lot. As we prayed, God prompted us to consult with some close friends, a few relatives, and our pastor. The advice we received led us to a solid plan to fight cancer we could get behind: Be honest with the children and invite them into the process.
Barbi and I continued to pray about our battle against cancer, but we also started asking God to give us the strength to be honest and confident as we told the boys about my cancer. Our strategy was to speak positively about the treatment and talk briefly about its possible side effects.
