After being cooped up with schools and businesses being closed for the past few months, for many families it hardly feels like a change of routine to go into summer break. The kids are going stir crazy at home, the housework’s been piling up as we navigate working remotely and most of us are searching for some relief. For some fresh air.
Covid shutdowns, economic hardships, race relations, protests and rioting…at times it can seem as if the whole world has just turned upside down. Regardless of what is happening around us, it is important for us all to take a deep breath, remember the Lord is in charge, and to take a break from our routines and have some fun together as a family. As Jesus said in the New Testament:
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” -Matthew 11:28-30
And as the Lord proclaimed in the Old Testament:
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work..” -Exodus 20:8-10
God has blessed us with loved ones, outdoor space, and the desire to recreate. Let’s take the Lord at his word and do so by spending time with our family and friends, and getting outdoors!
Recently, Barbi and I had the opportunity to drive out to Palm Springs for an outdoor hike. We decided to have some fun with our Covid attire and dress up a bit as you can see in the photo below. We had a blast! The drive out to the desert was a nice way to spend time together, enjoy conversation and a change of scenery.

Here are a few ideas to help keep the summer fun:
-Car rides, boat rides, bike rides and walks
-Camping and Picnics, even in the backyard
-Beach days, lake days, park days
-Backyard BBQ with your friends and neighbors
-Overnight trips (lodge and hotel rates are discounted)
-Visit a museum
-Take a favorite book and read outdoors (and enjoy an amazing nap!)
-Try some outdoor yoga at the park with a free YouTube video
The possibilities are endless, need not be expensive, and the fresh air will feel oh so good 🙂
